This course is intended for more experienced welders. Students learn new fabrication skills in forming steel and iron, GTAW (‘TIG’) welding, creating metal sculpture, working with found metal, and applying finishing techniques. Expand your skills in SMAW (‘Stick’), GMAW (‘MIG’), and/or Oxy-acetylene welding processes.

Description

A project-based course with the opportunity to explore a range of areas such as learning new fabrication skills in forming steel and iron, the GTAW (‘TIG’) welding process, creating metal sculpture, working with found metal, application of finishing techniques, and more. Build upon the fundamentals learned in Welding 1 by continuing to grow skills in the following welding processes SMAW (‘Stick’), GMAW (‘MIG’), and/or Oxy-acetylene. Apply your skills in any of the following project areas: functional pieces like small furniture, sculptural artistic works, and/or welding coupons designed to gain mileage and proficiency in a welding process(s).
Prerequisites: Welding 1 as a 6-8+ week course at Stonybrook Fine Arts, Ideally you’ve taken this course in the last two years and have been utilizing the skills learned on a regular basis. If you have not taken welding 1 with Stonybrook Fine Arst but have outside welding experience in SMAW, GMAW and/or Oxy-fuel welding please indicate that you’d like to be evaluated for inclusion in this course.

All safety gear is included, however, students are welcome to bring their own ANSI-approved safety glasses/face shields, welding hoods (minimum Shade 10), and gloves.

Students should wear durable closed-toe leather shoes, non-frayed jeans, a long sleeve natural fiber shirt, an old cap or bandana and tie back long hair.

 

Metal casting, jewelry making and mold making are available. Custom workshops are available as well, including: wedding ring workshops, teen welding intensives, and more!

Cancellation Policy:

  • Cancellation at 7 days prior to the first class will result in a full refund minus a $25 processing fee.
  • Cancellation at 6 days or less will result in a refund of 50% tuition or the full tuition can be used towards a different class within 12 months. The student is responsible for any differences in tuition or materials cost.
  • Students who neglect to cancel prior to the first class will have the option of transferring their tuition to another class or receiving a 50% refund. NO refunds will be made after the first class runs. Please make sure you fully understand what you are registering for prior to the class.
