In this beginner level intensive, students will learn methods of forming sheet metal.We will begin by making a decorative copper spoon together, and each design a final projectusing different combinations of dapping, chasing, sinking/shrinking, raising and planishingtechniques taught in the class.

Together we will learn how to make chains and jump rings, as well assome more advanced soldering and connection techniques. Students will all work on creating afinal project in Sterling Silver. Jewelry 1 for Teens or prior approval from the instructor requiredto take this course.

Teen Welding Intensive

Welding is an essential part of our lives – from the cars we drive, to the buildings we live in, and has also become prevalent in modern art. Our welding students find inspiration in a variety of welded sculpture, then practice various welding techniques at our studio including gas and arc welding.

Intensives will run Tuesday through Thursday. Students learn to use the many tools and machines involved in welding and finishing. Students should bring their lunch or money for lunch at Ula Cafe (walkable) where we take a group at lunch time. Students should wear closed-toe leather shoes, non-frayed jeans, a long sleeve natural fiber shirt, an old cap or bandana, and tie back long hair.

Jewelry 1 for Teens

In this introductory course, students learn the fundamentals of jewelry-making to createtheir own wearable designs. We start with sawing, filing, soldering, polishing, and other traditionalfabrication skills to make a custom sterling silver bezel-set ring. Using these skills, students designand create a final project in sterling silver (earrings, ring, pendant, or bracelet) under the guidance ofthe instructor.

Teen Green Sand Workshop

In this 2 day workshop students are introduced to the green sand molding process used with a metalcasting facility. Discussion will include: basic terminology, types of sands used to make green sand molds, the mold making-process, using and maintaining process equipment, and considerations for identifying casting defects.

Students will learn  the basics of molding with green sand as well as creating a simple, draftable pattern of their own to cast in aluminum. Safe furnace operation and metal pouring procedure will also be covered.

Class participants will learn to:

Use the various types of green sand molding raw materials and equipment appropriately and safely.Prepare simple green sand molds and discuss how to meet quality specifications.Examine molds and castings for defects and determine the corrective action needed.Describe the important safety measures and operating practices during the production of green sand molds.
